Saturday 30th August sees the 1st XI entertain Tranmere Victoria at School Lane, while the 2nd XI travel to high-flying Leigh.
25 August 2008: Bank Holiday Monday brought a win and a defeat for Burscough as the firsts demolished Moorfield, while the seconds were undone at St Helens. At School Lane the visitors elected to bat on a decent wicket but some poor shots combined with good bowling meant they were skittled for 44. Atho the chief destroyer wih 6/28 and Jacko chipping in with a frugal 4/13. The reply was relatively comfortable with Muzza making 25 before he and Maddy got out in the same way to the same pies to lose 2 unnecessary wickets. We finished on 45/4 with the skipper standing undefeated on nought not out for the maximum 25 points! The seconds travelled to Saints and fielded first, their hosts making 180/7 declared. the wickets were spread out with Lydlad 2/14, while Ferk, Griff, One Man Gang and Clogs took one each. The chase was looking okay but we collapsed from 74/2 to Nelson all out (thats 8/37!!!) Top score was extras with 30 closely followed by Webbo with 28 and Doons 26.
23 August 2008: A win and a draw for BCC this weekend, the 1st XI travelled to their bogey ground Liverpool Manweb and put a few ghosts to rest with a dominant 10 wicket win. Bowling first we bowled Manweb out for 49 with excellent perormances from Cujo 4/10; Powelly 3/19 and Atho 2/18. Stoner and Hughesy saw us comfortably home with 27 not out and 21 not out respectively. At School Lane the 2nds were frustrated by Ainsdale who blocked out for a bore draw. Batting first Burscough made 160 for 9 declared with Ferk hitting 57 and Diz 32, Webbo weighed in with 22. In the reply we made steady inroads and going into the last 20 it was 49 for 4, game on, or so we thought, Ainsdale proceeded to pat back the last twenty overs making a pathetic 16 runs to finish on 65 for 4: Ferk 2/22; Si 1/17; and Bezza with a worldy run out.
16 August 2008: Mixed fortunes this weekend for the BCC senior sides as the firsts beat the weather to defeat Birkenhead St Marys over the water; while the understrength seconds got beat by a strong Orrell Red Triangle side. On the Wirral we won the toss and elected to bat a decision that looked dodgy at 6 for 2. However, enter Muzza who smashed a fantastic 129 with 14 fours and 6 sixes to take us to 249 for 8 declared. Muz was supported by Cujo (24) and the impressive Wildlife who in his 1st knock for the 1st XI hit his best senior score of 45. The BSM reply was a race against the weather for us but cometh the hour and all that: Powelly 6 for 12 off 8.2 overs; Atho (2), Jacko and Dizzo shared the other 4 wickets as the hosts collapsed to 113 all out. In Burscough the 2nds batted first but made a poor fist of it, being bowled out for just 74 with Ferk top-scoring on 26. Webbo with 20 was the only other player to make double figures. ORT knocked off the target comfortably for the loss of just 3 wickets, taken by Ferk, Si and Bezzin.
9 August 2008: Both games abandoned as draws at about midday.
2 August 2008: Probably the match of the day took place at School Lane as Burscough 2nd XI chased down over 200 for the third time against Maghull seconds this season. Maghull were invited to bat first on the Burscough road and posted 201/5 declared. Excellent spells from Bezza (3/42) and the Lyd lad (1/47) kept the Maghull batsmen at the crease for 56.5 overs. The chase was exciting from start to finish with the early losses of in-form batsman Dooney for 6 and a golden duck for Tayls putting Burscough on the back foot. But Tom Escott with a splendid 69 accompanied by Ferk (35), Diz (31*), and Webbo (27) saw us home. Ste Diz hitting a four and a 6 before scampering a quick single with Griff (2*) in the final over to win it. The first team travelled to Trinity and should once agin be extremely disappointed with their batting performance. Having bowled the hosts out for 88 with the fantastic Powelly taking 5/14; Cujo 2/3; JD 1/11; Dobbo 1/12 and Jackman 1/18 Burscough put themselves in a very strong position. The chase started comfortably with Kenny Hughes (17) and Jon Stone (6) putting on 29 for the 1st wicket. Then it went very wrong with some very poor performances. We lost ten wickets for a paltry 49 runs to finish 11 short of victory at 78 all out.
26 July 2008: Back on track? Lets hope so... Good victories for both senior sides this weekend to halt a run of disappointing performances. At School Lane the first XI defeated promotion outsiders Sutton by 8 wickets. Winning the toss and bowling first on a scorching day (thanks Daz), Dizza and Cujo bowled fantastic spells of slow bowling, Neil with 3 for 9 and Maddy, slightly unlucky to only come away with 1/53 off 15 overs. They were backed up by the seamers - JD (2/12), Atho (2/23) and Jacko (1/18) - in difficult conditions. The visitors fell to 119 all out. The biggest question was could we put together two decent halves of cricket, the answer was yes... Thanks to an excellent 69 not out from Maddog and a determined 39 not out from Hughesy we came away with victory for the loss of just 2 wickets. The second team travelled to Southport and comprehensively defeated their hosts by 8 wickets. Fielding first Burscough bowlers Griff, Cloggsy, Ste Diz and Ferk combined to bowl out Trinity for 107. Si the pick with 4/46, Nick weighed in with 3, Clogs with 2 and Diz with the other. The chase was pretty straightforward albeit with Wildlife finally living up to his name: LBW to the first ball of the innings. Dooney and Tayls (34) took the score onto 68. Before vice-captain Webbo (24*) came in and hit all his runs in boundaries, this effort was in support of Doons who anchored the innings finishing 48 not out (50 evasion IMO). A pleasing day for BCC.
Okay I'm back :) - 19 July 2008: A disappointing day for Burscough today to be honest, the first XI had hopes of bouncing back from last weeks batting woes, but were thwarted by the weather as their match with Haydock was called off. The second team also had high expectations at home to St Helens Recs, but after several players worked very hard to get the square fit, we put in a very disappointing batting performance. Having been asked to bat we made a slow start that wasn't helped by Dooney's niggling thigh injury, we lost Wildlife and Tayls early doors but stand-in skipper Webbo and Doons were steadying the ship, then a mini collapse as the aforementioned pair departed, before Ste Diz and Si got going, drinks inevitably brought the wicket as Griff departed and Bez entered the fray. Steve was given out LBW in dubious circumstances but all credit to Bez he stuck with the tail and was eventually stranded on 40 not out when Jacko tried to hoik one across the line and was out leg before. It told a tale that the partnership for the 10th wicket (27) between myself and Bezza was the highest of the innings. We made 132 in total. In all honesty I thought if we bowled properly we had enough runs in difficult batting conditions. We started extremely well with Bez and myself stunning the visitors with 3 quick wickets, unfortunately that was as good as it got, from 4 for 3 Recs went to 77 for 3, before Wildlife removed a couple in a very good spell of 2/17 off 5 overs. The Saints batsmen then had a bit of a go with Lydlad and One Man Gang in his second spell suffering. Jacko came back to take another in 2/19 off 12 overs but we were at least 30 runs short, losing by 4 wickets with 6.2 overs to go.
Saturday 5th July saw the 1st XI head off to Norley Hall for another big game at the top of the league. On a damp day Burscough captain Lemarinel won the toss and decided to bat with the threat of weather all around. We amassed a competitive 251-9 declared off 53 overs with Madura De Silva scoring a majestic 89 and Kenny Hughes keeping him company with a more subdued 47, and Alan Murray provided an entertaining cameo towards the end. Norleys reply centered around a very impressive Imran Qadir (son of Abdul) who smashed the ball to all parts in scoring 153 he was aided by skipper Norvel who added 49 but all credit to Lee Jackson and Madura De Silva who bowled at the death to restrict Norley to 248-7 as time ran out.
The 2nd XI were due to play Prestatyn at School Lane but were washed out by mid morning and not a ball was bowled.
Sunday 6th July saw both teams in cup action. The 1st XI travelled to Stretford and suffered the disappointment of being beaten in a bowl out. All players bowled one ball each and we unfortunately lost 2-0. Ironically the legend that is Richard Powell had never,in all his playing career took part in a bowl out and with only him left to bowl at the end we were already 2-0 down and therefore he never got to bowl. Sorry Richard maybe next year!
The 2nd XI were also involved in a rain affected game bowling ST Helens out for 112 before the rain came at lunch. By the time the rain had stopped and the pitch readied for further play, there was only time for 10 overs to be bowled at Burscough. Enter Duckworth/Lewis and this left us needing only 27 for the loss of no more than 2 wickets in 10 overs. What happened next was a blur but by the end of 10 overs we found ourselves 4 runs short of the required total and out of the Chester Cup.(Least said soonest mended.)
